Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Financial literacy, encompassing skills like budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt, is essential for individual and community economic empowerment. Despite its importance, financial literacy remains low in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, where poverty and low education levels are prevalent (Abubakar & Garba, 2024). Films, as an accessible and engaging medium, have proven effective in educating audiences on complex topics through storytelling and relatable narratives. In recent years, Nollywood and regional filmmakers have begun to incorporate themes of financial literacy into their content, using compelling characters and situations to illustrate practical financial concepts (Ali & Musa, 2023). This study examines the effectiveness of films as tools for teaching financial literacy in Sabon Birni, exploring their reach, content, and impact on audience behavior.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The lack of financial literacy in rural areas like Sabon Birni exacerbates poverty and economic vulnerability. Traditional methods of financial education, such as workshops and seminars, are often inaccessible or ineffective due to low attendance and engagement. Films, with their ability to entertain and educate simultaneously, offer an alternative approach, but their potential as a medium for financial literacy education remains underexplored (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2023). This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of films in teaching financial literacy to the residents of Sabon Birni.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the content of films promoting financial literacy.
  2. To assess the impact of films on the financial knowledge and practices of audiences in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities of using films as tools for financial literacy education.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What financial literacy concepts are depicted in films?
  2. How do films influence financial knowledge and practices in Sabon Birni Local Government Area?
  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using films to teach financial literacy?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films effectively depict key concepts of financial literacy.
  2. Exposure to financial literacy-themed films improves the financial knowledge of audiences in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
  3. Limited access to films and language barriers affect their effectiveness in teaching financial literacy.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the innovative use of films as a medium for financial education, particularly in rural and underserved areas. By evaluating their effectiveness, the research contributes to the development of media-based interventions for improving financial literacy. The findings will benefit filmmakers, educators, NGOs, and policymakers working to enhance economic empowerment through education.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the effectiveness of films in teaching financial literacy in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State. It examines specific films with financial literacy themes and their impact on the local population.
